Snow Biking and Night Riding

Looks like the weatherman put the old hyperbole to the forecast again. Don’t go out the roads are going be slick and horrible for driving. I say yea for driving but for snow biking the roads rock roll. I mounted the helmet cam and shot some video of this morning commute. The lights I used are helmet mounted Cygolite Dualcross pro and the Cygolite TridenX.

Get it right Press Repulsive Winter Cycling

Get it right Press Repulsive you posted a great article about the endurance sport of winter cycling. It’s the title of the article that is wrong it reads, “Biking the newest sport to hit the slopes” The slopes WTF the guys and gals are endurance athletes. Riding thru some of the worst weather in the coldest of states. I happen to blog with many of the people mentioned. They ride for days with little or no sleep ride thru deep snow camp outside some don’t even use a tent. By putting the words hitting the slopes in the title you make it sound like it’s a walk in the park at some ski resort it’s not. These folks are some of the toughest and determined people you will ever talk to or read about. These races make the Tour de France look like a ride around the block.

ADK High Peaks Ski Trip

Lake Colden via Marcy Dam and Avalanche Pass with a slight detour at then end of the day that added 8.4 miles to the trip opps I’m notorious for doing stuff like that. Sorry Colleen I’ll let you plan the next trip LOL. Anyway the day started out with a bang about 200 yards in and CRACK I snapped my ski pole in half, so we limped back into ADK loj. Luckily they have used ski poles for sale.

Avalanche Pass and Lake still amaze me. I been there at least 8 times in the last 20 years and I’m still impressed by sheer beauty of this place. Were lucky to have the Adirondacks in are back yard. If you plan on skiing Avalanche Pass climbing skins would be nice. Are day thru the pass was ski/hike ski/hike over and over and no we didn’t posthole on the ski trail just walked the steeper sections of the snowshoe trails.

THE DETOUR

Note to self-John always look at the MAP first. Well we end up heading out towards MT Van Hoevenberg I was wondering why the sun was behind us (John look at the Map) Just need the head northwest should be just a mile to the road nope try more like 3 miles. (John look at the Map) Just keep telling her it’s a little bit farther. Anyways we had a blast.

Plattsburgh Internatinal Airport

Plattsburgh International Airport

I found all this off of wikipedia.com. It makes you wonder if any of are elected officials do any type of rersearch at all about the airlines they bring into plattsburgh.

Cape Air Airlines

Grounding of entire fleet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Air
On June 12, 2007 Cape Air CEO Daniel Wolf announced the grounding of all of Cape Air's 49 Cessna 402 aircraft nationwide, after three in flight engine failures. The problem was blamed on premature wear on the crankshaft All 402 services were canceled for two days while the counterweights were inspected and replaced if necessary. Normal service resumed about four days after the initial fleet grounding.

Big Lie I mean Big Sky Airlines
The airline was established in 1978 and started operations on September 15, 1978. It started to take over Aspen Mountain Air's Essential Air Service routes in October 1998, following Aspen's bankruptcy. Transfer of services was completed in December 1998.

In late 2002, Big Sky Airlines offered service between Idaho Falls, Idaho and Denver, Colorado but canceled it three months afterward, declaring it unprofitable.[3]

In early 2005, Big Sky announced a few changes to its service, planning the termination of service to North Dakota, and replacing its Metro fleet with Beechcraft 1900Ds which will be leased from Mesa Air Group subsidiary Air Midwest.

Previous Big Sky In July 2006, Big Sky announced that the airline would discontinue service to Great Falls, Montana; Kalispell, Montana; and Spokane, Washington. The airline also announced that one of their Beech 1900D's would be leased to an airline in Florida.

On September 1, 2006, Big Sky discontinued service to Moses Lake, Washington.

Big Sky operated as a Delta Connection carrier from Boston Logan International Airport. Big Sky provides the service using Beechcraft 1900D aircraft. The service ended on January 7, 2008. On December 20, 2007, Big Sky announced that it would more than likely cease operations within 60-90 days. This was due to the loss of the Delta contract, unusually bad weather, disappointing revenue and record-high fuel prices.

Moose Mitts

15F Below Zero + Moose Mitts = Warm Hands. you can find these at trails edge.com

Stop buying gloves/lobster claws and buy a pair of Moose Mitts/Pogies I never though it would be possible to have warm hands in these temps. Yes they are bit bulky but not overly large. Once you get use to them you don’t even notice them. I just used a thin pair of wind stopper fall riding gloves inside the mitts. Eleven miles later my digits were toasty.

I highly recommend them to anyone who rides in brutal temps. My rating 5 stars.

Main Stream Media

I remain a minority of people who proactively ferret out information on the Internet, so if the main stream media wants to merge one brainless medium with another it doesn’t inconvenience me at a personal level. The thing that should alarm us about the trend in media consolidation is the impact on the 70% of minimally educated, politically ambivalent middle Americans who want the editorial page to tell them who to vote for, or who want the man on the TV to tell them it’s a great thing for their kid to join the army. It is the couch potatoes of America, not its political activists, who decide elections and determine the future direction of us all.
