Ok some of you have known me for a while; yes I do ride my bike all winter. So why is it that some people I’ve known for years ask me the same question over and over again year after year, It must have been cold riding your bike Today. NO I’ve rode @29 below zero with the wind chill @ -55below, how often do people get cold skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding? It’s like any other sport that involves exercising you create body heat.
Then they just role their eyes. Then I tell them I go winter camping in the high peaks in the middle of winter most can’t even grasp that with their TINY brain. Riding in those temps is not for everyone but some of us actually enjoy the challenge.

RANT OFF sorry sometime you just need to vent.

Financially In most cases, the government offers a substantial amount of discounts and bonuses to employers who take on a disabled person. The government will also pay the disabled person's wages, should the person fall ill, or should they be unable to perform their tasks due to their disability.

Motivation. It is very often the case that disabled people are highly motivated. They have worked hard to get where they are and have a tendency to want to perform well.

Skill. People with disabilities are often very good at what they do. Because of the physical limitations they have had in their lives, they very often focus on something they are really good at.

Practicality. Disabled people often find very practical ways of doing their job, making them very structured.

Efficiency. One of the biggest issues is that disabled people are believed to work slower than your average employee. True is some cases, false in others. Either way, most people with disabilities are aware of this and will find ways to be as efficient as possible.

Image. Hiring a disabled person makes your company look really good. There's no getting around it and it's not sad.

Lance Armstrong will come out of retirement next year to compete in five road races with the Astana team, according to sources familiar with the developing situation.

Armstrong, who turns 37 this month, will compete in the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphiné Libéré and the Tour de France — and will race for neither salary nor bonuses, the sources, who asked to remain anonymous, told VeloNews.

Armstrong's manager, Mark Higgins, did not respond to questions. And an Astana spokesman denied the report to The Associated Press.

"He is no part of our team," Astana team press officer Philippe Maertens told the AP in an e-mail. "Team Astana has no plans with him."

However, sources close to the story have told VeloNews that an exclusive article on the matter will be published in an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, expected later this month. Vanity Fair editors did not respond to requests for comment.

Rumors of Armstrong's return swirled at last week’s Eurobike trade show in Germany and this week’s Tour of Missouri.

The rumor speculates that Armstrong will reunite with former team manager Johan Bruyneel at Team Astana — a viable option given Armstrong’s long-lasting relationships not only with the Belgian director but also Trek, Astana’s bike sponsor.

According to sources, the Texan will post all of his internally tested blood work online, in an attempt to establish complete transparency and prove that he is a clean athlete.

The rumor, which has been rampant for nearly a month, gained legs when former Discovery Channel team director Dirk Demol signed with Astana for 2009.

“I am excited to be reunited with Johan Bruyneel," Demol said. "What Johan has been able to do this year with Team Astana is quite special and admirable and I look forward to being a part of his program once again. It will be a new team with some familiar faces, but I know the winning philosophy and structure have remained the same.”

Other rumors are that Armstrong will continue to pursue mountain bike racing, and may try his hand at cyclocross as well.

Should Armstrong return with Astana, it would bolster a squad that arguably boasts the sport’s best stage-racing team.

In Missouri, Columbia rider George Hincapie, a close friend of Armstrong’s and the only man to ride on all seven of the Texan’s Tour winning teams, simply smiled when asked what he knew about the rumor, saying, “I don’t know anything.”

Armstrong re-enrolled himself into the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s out-of-competition testing pool prior to August’s Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race, where he finished second to Dave Wiens, said USA Cycling chief operating officer Sean Petty.

USADA rules state that any athlete who wishes to come out of retirement must enroll in the USADA out-of-competition testing program for at least six months in advance of regaining eligible status.

A return to racing would no doubt bring large crowds to American races, and could perhaps save the Tour de Georgia, which is struggling to land a title sponsor.

Petty said that should Armstrong wish to return to racing, “it would be one of the most exciting things to happen to American racing since he won his seventh Tour. Depending on his plan, if that is what he wanted to do, it would be tremendously exciting and would generate a tremendous amount of attention on the sport, and on what he’s doing. People would be very interested to see how he would do in a comeback.”

September 3, 2008—Canada's polar scientists have had little time for summer vacation this year.

That's because they've been closely monitoring the country's Arctic ice shelves, which have crumbled at an alarming pace over the past few months.

Nearly 23 percent of the total area—more than three times the size of Manhattan—has disappeared since 2007, satellite images show (above).

In July the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf broke apart, followed by the surprise collapse in August of the Markham Ice Shelf, which is now adrift in the Arctic Ocean.

And the recently named Serson Ice Shelf has shrunk by 60 percent—an "incredible" loss, said Derek Mueller, the Roberta Bondar Fellow in Northern and Polar Studies at Trent University in Ontario.

Large swaths of open water surrounding the shelves near the northern coast of Ellesmere Island have allowed breathing room for the ice to disintegrate, Mueller told National Geographic News. (See map.)

"Highly unusual" temperatures, up to 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) in some places, certainly aren't helping the situation, he added.

"These ice shelves are changing as the Arctic is changing," Mueller said. For instance, the rate of Arctic sea-ice loss this year is poised to break 2007's all-time low. And Mueller expects more disintegration to occur in coming months, especially in the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, which has ribbons of cracks crisscrossing its surface.

"The overall scene is one of rapid change, and one that I'm sure has me and other polar scientists scrambling to understand as [it] occurs."

I found this over at bikecommuters.com I really like this story.

Is it just me or is everyone else tired of watching or listening to car commercials touting MPG figures? Some commercials even use some annoying jingles like Toyota’s “I want my MPG”. Here’s what really annoys me, the MPG numbers that auto makers use are for highway driving and using a stick-shift. I can’t recall the last time I rode a highway in L.A. and about 99% of people drive automatics.

Now, EPA City MPG numbers vary from car to car but they are 6 to 10 mpg lower than the EPA hwy MPG. So I’m wondering if consumers are actually falling for this MPG marketing gimmick?

So I have a new marketing idea. Car dealers are you listening???? Need to sell that Suburban that has been in your dealership for over 6 months?? I took the road bike out for the fifth time this season. I set out to do around 1800’ feet of climbing at the distance of 22.3 miles. The last 1.2 miles of the climb is in that dreaded Hors category which means beyond classification in the racing community. I started out slow bring the pace up at the three mile mark. That’s when the grade of the climb starts to increase then turns back in to long roller types of hills. This is when that Cycling High kicked in. That blood pumping, vein bursting, I can do anything came to bear. The feeling of being unstoppable while climbing is the best drug MONEY CAN’ BUY!

So go out and find that one climb that you love. Then totally destroy it. It does the body good. Even as I write this I’m still feeling the effect of this high that money can’t buy 16 hours later.

Saturday March 26

It was a perfect late season skiing day bright sunshine, temps 25-30F and light winds from the north.

So Colleen wants to learn how to downhill ski and she asks me to teach her. This ought to be interesting I have never taught anyone to ski before lets see if I’m up to the task at hand oh boy!

Turns out that she seems to be a natural at skiing 3 quick runs and only 2 wipeouts on the bunny slope. She’s ready for some bigger trials like “The long way Home” a couple more runs on the easy stuff without a wipeout not bad at all. I’m thinking to myself let me see what she got. Follow me trust me (evil grin--she should know better then to follow me)
I knew perfectly well we we’re heading towards a black diamond run. I was impressed she skied the whole run slowly but she made it.

I’m still laughing about the 2 lift incidents we had. I’m going leave that story for another day I have no idea what she was thinking OMG.

Get it right Press Repulsive you posted a great article about the endurance sport of winter cycling. It’s the title of the article that is wrong it reads, “Biking the newest sport to hit the slopes” The slopes WTF the guys and gals are endurance athletes. Riding thru some of the worst weather in the coldest of states. I happen to blog with many of the people mentioned. They ride for days with little or no sleep ride thru deep snow camp outside some don’t even use a tent. By putting the words hitting the slopes in the title you make it sound like it’s a walk in the park at some ski resort it’s not. These folks are some of the toughest and determined people you will ever talk to or read about. These races make the Tour de France look like a ride around the block.

ADK High Peaks Ski Trip

Lake Colden via Marcy Dam and Avalanche Pass with a slight detour at then end of the day that added 8.4 miles to the trip opps I’m notorious for doing stuff like that. Sorry Colleen I’ll let you plan the next trip LOL. Anyway the day started out with a bang about 200 yards in and CRACK I snapped my ski pole in half, so we limped back into ADK loj. Luckily they have used ski poles for sale.

Avalanche Pass and Lake still amaze me. I been there at least 8 times in the last 20 years and I’m still impressed by sheer beauty of this place. Were lucky to have the Adirondacks in are back yard. If you plan on skiing Avalanche Pass climbing skins would be nice. Are day thru the pass was ski/hike ski/hike over and over and no we didn’t posthole on the ski trail just walked the steeper sections of the snowshoe trails.

Stop buying gloves/lobster claws and buy a pair of Moose Mitts/Pogies I never though it would be possible to have warm hands in these temps. Yes they are bit bulky but not overly large. Once you get use to them you don’t even notice them. I just used a thin pair of wind stopper fall riding gloves inside the mitts. Eleven miles later my digits were toasty.

I highly recommend them to anyone who rides in brutal temps. My rating 5 stars.

DiNotte tail light AA pro

The Dinotte tail light is second to none! Motorists WILL give you more room when passing. I was amazed at the pattern it puts down on the road. Just the aura is attention grabbing. If you’re sick of dealing with junk do yourself a favor and buy a Dinotte tail light. I’m sure I have enough cheap-o blinkies lying around to almost pay for a Dinotte.

In my opinion, the o-rings mounting system is awesome. In less than a minute you can have it mounted on another bike. This is unlike other blinkies in which you’ll have to purchase extra mounting brackets or spend much more time moving them from bike to bike. Should an o-ring break or you need one with better tension for your mounting needs just make a trip to the local hardware store.

I also make use of it in daylight hours. During the Fall long shadows are cast from trees on to the roads. Again, the Dinotte tail light prevents you from becoming lost in the shadows. Other tail lights simply cannot put out a commanding flash in such conditions.

I don't criticize the price one bit. This is a safety device in a league of its own and well worth the expense.

I'll wait till spring to post this in the Press repulsive.

Admittedly I represent a small minority here: adults who use their bicycles for transportation, specifically commuting to and from their place of business. Let’s start with a little bit of education: bicycles like other slower moving vehicles are permitted on most state and local roads as a matter of law. The only restriction is that they obey general traffic rules and if it is safe for them to do so stay to the right so as to allow faster moving vehicles to pass.

Riding a 30lb bicycle and competing for the same space with 3 to 6 thousand LB cars and trucks is no contest. We tend to stay to the right most of the time. However there are occasions when we need to occupy a little more space than the extreme right, (no political pun intended.)

In order to be seen by motorists we like to ride a good 3 feet from the edge of the curb or shoulder. Using our ears and rear view mirror when a faster vehicle is approaching to pass, we usually oblige by moving over as far right as possible. Keep in mind however; we are only obligated to do so as long as it is safe for us to do so. Situations that do not spell safe are heavy sand, broken tree limbs and debris, frozen surfaces, potholes, glass and broken pavement. Under these circumstances, we try to maintain our position until it is safe for us to move right.

Don’t make matters worse by honking or worse crowding us with 2 tons of heavy metal. 50% of the passenger cars on the road today are either SUV’ s or light trucks that further exacerbate the problem by being wider than most roads were designed for. Sometimes you will need to cross the center line in order to safely pass. If another vehicle coming in the other direction prevents that, slow down and wait until its safe to pass.

Give us the same respect you would the occasional farmer moving his tractor a few miles up the road at his max speed of 15 miles/hour or the Police officer issuing someone a ticket and the Road construction workers performing there job. We all have families to go home to!

Many of you may feel that bike riding with traffic or working near traffic is not safe. That’s surely a defensible opinion, but think a bit further, if you’ve already identified something as being a bit risky, why do you participate in making it more so via your aggressive behavior? Slow down, give all road users some room. There aren’t that many of us.

One more thing: we have allowed our entire culture, politics and economy to be driven and dominated by the automobile. While I deplore this state of affairs and in some small way am trying to demonstrate an alternative point of view I don’t think I should have to compromise my physical safety to do so.

The Day After Black Friday

I'll start off by saying sorry about the rant yesterday if any of you where out shopping yesterday. I just love to rant and rave helps me stay in control and relives stress.

The ride in today was so unreal 15 degrees and 7 mph winds I say that's just about perfect riding temps for me.. I have my late night roads and streets back. The peace of the night ride compared to the nightmare of last night has me being thankful. Wait did say I thankful? Oh shit! I should buy some turkey and celebrate Thanksgiving Oh shit I missed that to.

Any way I'm stuck at the gym on Saturday pulling overtime. I hate working weekends, I should be out riding at this moment. Oh well I'll have to make up for it tomorrow.

Black Friday

This blog was born out of a desire, or perhaps even need to express how awed I am at the depth of human stupidity. Why? After watching holiday shoppers trample each other for $5 slippers on "Black Friday", what other conclusion can one draw?

What really pushed me over the edge was a picture of an 11-year-old girl at the front of a crowd at some Wally Mart. The image of her little face squashed against a metal gate speaks volumes both to the parents and the apes amassed behind her. In fact, Planet of the Apes is what came to mind as the local T.V. station ran a loop of these baboon like morons leaping over fallen bodies to purchase or steal dollar store junk at a Wal-Mart.

PEOPLE: This crap is on sale all the time. All this junk is made in China by little kids they don't have to pay and floods every U.S. store large and small.

A couple of months ago, Best Buy had DVD players for less than 30 bucks. A few weeks later, more than half the pile was still there. If it was 29 bucks today, some smelly, toothless, knuckle dragging Darwin award candidate would have gladly stepped on your head to get to it.

Winter is almost here!

The last few rides into work have been on the cold side. It's almost time to mount the nokian studded tires (160 mount and ground) they should be lighter then my old set of 294s. The bike been rebuilt and I have been getting all my cold weather gear ready.
